I was thinking a little about language and how it develops over the years.
I was wondering whether, given that the next century holds some pretty big challenges for us all as inhabitants of Earth, we'll see this reflected in the words and expressions we use or how we use them?
Recently we've learned countless new expressions, some of which we have adopted very quickly. I wonder if any of us would have had the faintest idea what a 'carbon-footprint' was ten years ago? In the same way we shelve them just as quick. Who can remember 'cfc-friendly' when it was on every can of deodorant?
In the same way that a word like 'terrific' has changed meaning completely over the years, might we see a day when 'luxurious' is only used in a negative way?
Will there come a point when 'leasure-centres' 'extreme sports' and 'power-shopping' seem ridiculous?
