After a trip to the local dump on Saturday I was astounded to see what people throw away. I counted five bikes, one of which would have taken home and repaired if I could have reached it. (I didn't fancy climbing into the container it was burried in and there was an official looking man in brightly coloured over-alls staring at me.)
I've already signed up to my local freecycle group here in Copenhagen (if they ever reply to my mail) but there yet another re-cycling initiative coming along apparently. It's called MySkip. You can read a little more about it here.
MySkip.com is basically a rip off of an already existing website called vSkips. vSkips has been under development for 3 years by a couple of guys in Derbyshire, UK. Paul and Len came up with the idea when filling a skip with rubbish and thinking "there must be a better way". The site, entirely funded by themselves, and using no celebrity endorsements or media hype (unlike MySkip) went live in April 2007 and now has over 2000 members across the UK. There are some amazing items on the site including dishwashers, sheds, bikes and even cars - all going FREE to whoever wants them. MySkip have tried to emulate what has already been done and have resorted to spamming and splogging (spam blogging) to draw attention away from vSkips. The public, however, are not so easily fooled and have seen through MySkip.com's unethical (and ungreen) approach. May the battle commence !
